Christmas Party 2009

This past Monday night's event was so much fun. We had a wonderful turnout of about 21 alumnae. Thank you to everyone that showed up and brought food. I enjoyed visiting with everyone and I look forward to the next event in January (January 18th, "Rachel Ray Cooking Night").

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

*Don't forget to watch Survivor on Thursday night on CBS. Go Natalie! You are doing an amazing job.*

Sorority House Location Options

It's finally happening!

The Inter/National Presidents held a conference call to discuss the housing proposal. They have all agreed to revise the housing agreement and are in the process of signing a new document. The wording for the new document will be as follows:

“The NPC Delegates and Inter/National Presidents of women’s fraternities at Arkansas State University agree to the following: for the current biennium, we will cooperate with each other and the University Administration in the development of any housing program.

Their next steps are to go back to the local groups and/or national housing corporations to have them begin work on cost analysis and financing options. The national offices are looking to have the cost analysis back by end of January 2010 to have a better position to the feasibility of this development. So far I am optimistic and have had positive conversations that are encouraging. I will keep you posted on any changes.

Need a Christmas Gift Idea?

Have you ever wondered what you were going to do with your old sorority t-shirts?

How about a t-shirt quilt? Sigma Omicron's alumna, Cathy Naylor, has kindly offered her services for anyone interested in purchasing a one of a kind keep sake. Cathy charges $80 per quilt, this includes any supplies she might need. Of course the price could increase depending on how expensive of fabric you pick out. She usually makes the quilts 6 shirts x 6 shirts (36 t-shirts total), which equals to about 6ft by 6ft because she uses a 1 sq foot section from the back of the shirt. If there is a design on the front pocket that you want, she may be able to find a way to do that also. But if you want a bigger quilt, just bring her more shirts!

Don't forget about your significant other, maybe they too were in a fraternity. How about your children's old jerseys, high school shirts, etc.? The possibilities are endless.

Ben Sherman was made an honorary "Pi Guy".

Fundraiser for Ben Sherman

Our wonderful collegian girls are absolutely amazing. They decided they wanted to have a fundraiser for a local St. Jude patient. That patient is Ben Sherman, an amazing young boy from Jonesboro, AR. Please go to http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/bensherman to read more about Ben and his progress.

Our girls (alumnae as well) will be selling tickets for Strawberry's BBQ plates. If you are not familiar with Strawberry's check out their website. http://www.strawsbbq.com/ They are sooooo good. Tickets are $15 each and include 1 pork steak, 3 sides & bread. This is an amazing deal and all proceeds go to Ben Sherman and his family. If you are interested in purchasing tickets or selling tickets please contact Sarah Wiggins Murphy at themurphys@suddenlink.net.

Just this past Sunday, Ben and his mother and sister visited the AOII suite to talk about St. Jude, Ben's progress and how much they appreciate the AOII's.

Homecoming is this weekend!

I hope everyone is planning on stopping by the AOII tent in tailgate city. The tailgate starts at 3:00 and goes until kick-off.

During the last alumnae meeting we decided to do only desserts at the tailgate since most people will be involved with other tailgates. It also relieves a lot of pressure on our budget and volunteers, sadly we just don't have enough money to cater a meal. With all that said I need people to sign up for desserts and drinks. All the paper products and coolers and ice have already been taken care of.

Please email me linzburnett@hotmail.com with what type of desserts or drinks you will be bringing. All food and drinks must be delivered to the alumnae tent by 2:00 on Saturday the 24th. You can drop off desserts and drinks Friday the 23rd at my office, The ASU Cooper Alumni Center.

Setup & decorating will begin Saturday morning (early). Misti Sims is in charge of decorating. Please email her at misti.sims@sbcglobal.net if you would like to help decorate.

Also, don't forget this Wednesday the 21st is the collegian girls' Step Show competition. Step Show starts at 7:00 at the ASU Convocation Center, admission is free. Some of us alumnae will be meeting at the 501 for dinner prior to Step Show. If you would like to meet us at the 501 at 5:15 for dinner this Wednesday please email me linzburnett@hotmail.com so that the appropriate reservations can be made.

Thank you so much and I look forward to seeing everyone Wednesday and Saturday.

Don't forget to check the blog often for news and updates. http://www.aoiisigmaomicron.blogspot.com/

Expansion/Extension

NPC Extension proposals have been received and they are available in the Leadership Center for members to review and give feedback. Please take some time to stop by and review these materials in order to acquaint yourself with the organizations that have an interest in coming to Arkansas State University. We received four proposals (Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Delta Pi, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Alpha Sigma Alpha). In October we will invite three organizations to campus to give presentations. As of right now we are still on track to have a new member of our NPC Community in Fall 2010!

How "Rush" Operates these days

Dear AOII Sisters,

My name is Sarah Murphy, and I am the recruitment adviser for the Sigma Omicron chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi. In the 8 years I have been working with the chapter, rush has gone through many changes. The days of parties, skits, and shrimp cocktail are long gone. The girls now participate in "no frills rush". The following are a few changes that I know many of you are not aware of:

*Rush consists of 3 days.
- Day 1: Information Party -The girls wear NPC provided t-shirts and jeans with simple sandals. Each sorority has a different color shirt and the rushees (PNMs aka potential new members) all wear the same colored t-shirt also provided by NPC. We no longer do skits at ANY party. Information party consists of mainly visiting with the PNMs and also watching a well put together slide show of the past year's events.
- Day 2: Philanthropy Party - The girls wear block letter t-shirts and jeans. The PNMs wear either dresses or a cute outfit. This night the girls decorate t-shirts for stuffed pandas to wear and then send the pandas to Camp Joy, a camp that houses children who have arthritis. They also watch a video this night about Arthritis Research.
- Day 3: Preference Party - The girls all wear black dresses that they buy on their own. However, each dress is approved by the recruitment chair to assure it is appropriate. The PNMs wear nice dresses. Pref party has changed the least and is most likely still how most of you remember.

*The chapter is now governed by the AAC board, which is a group of 15 advisers. Each adviser has two officers she advises and takes care of. I am over the MIF (membership information form) and recruitment officers. This helps to lesson the burden on one person. Megan Haines Morris is the chapter adviser and she oversees the AAC board and the chapter as a whole. She does a fabulous job and the girls absolutely love her! Thanks Megan for all you do for our chapter!!! AAC meets once a month and reports on our officer and Megan reports on the chapter as a whole.

*We have approximately 65-70 active members and will add approximately 35-40 new members. Yes, we are usually right at 100 or so members!

*Rush will be Saturday August 29 - Monday August 31st with bids going out at 5 on Tuesday September 1st. Anyone who would like to come up to the suite is welcome for all parties but must leave for bid sessions. Times will not be set until Friday night after the 4 pm cut-off to sign up. I will try to forward times to you guys when we get them, but as of now parties will start at 8am and go until 4:30 on Saturday and start at 10 am on Sunday. We are working on these times as they are a bit early to start! Ok, so they are ridiculously early, but they did not ask me! Please do not email me after Friday as I will be tied up at the suite from Friday evening through Tuesday evening. I do have lots of help from the AAC board and Megan. Lindsay Burnett and I have worked together on rush for four years now and have it down to an art form! She is a faithful partner in rush and I cannot say how much I appreciate her help. I think we slept a total of 8 hours in 4 days last year! What's the old saying "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!" Lindsay, Megan and I will be very strong after next week! On the serious side, it is an honor to work with the girls and I love every minute of it! They are a great bunch of girls!

I hope I have given you a small idea of the changes that have occurred over the past years. If you have any questions feel free to email me and I will try to respond as quickly as possible. Thanks for all your help!

Alpha Love,
Sarah Wiggins Murphy

AOII Cookbook

To the Alumnae of Alpha Omicron Pi,

Hey guys! I just wanted to tell you all about an upcoming fundraiser the AOII Parent’s Club is doing! We are currently collecting recipes from all members who are interested in participating in the first ever AOII and AOII Parent’s cookbook. You can submit as many as you would like, the more the merrier! They don’t have to just be yours and your Mom’s, although that is the general pattern we are seeing…there is going to be a special barbecue section for Dad’s too! We would love to have any other recipes from siblings, grandparents, mother-in-laws, aunts, uncles or any of the above! We are either going to sell them around Christmas or Mother’s Day, depending on how many we actually collect (but we are aiming for Christmas!). We have already started typing them and we are using a company called Morris Cookbook’s. They will be very professionally done with a 3-ring binder and decorated hardback cover so they will make great gifts for any holiday! If you are interested in publishing your recipes, please just email them to me at lhawkins@fsbancorp.com or to my mom at khawkins62@hotmail.com (if you would prefer to mail them, my mailing address is 4001 Cornerstone Dr., Jonesboro, AR 72401). Make sure to include your name and the name of person whose recipe you are submitting. We are very excited and we have already received a HUGE response from the members and their parent’s, but like I said, the more the merrier!! So send as many as you want and try to have them in by September 1 just so we will have plenty of time to organize and type them. I will send another email when we are getting ready to sell them with price details and stuff!

Thank you all so much for your continued support and dedication to AOII. We are so grateful to have such active and helpful alumnae and we know our chapter would be NOWHERE without you guys!! Thanks so much, I look forward to hearing from you all!

Sincerely,

Lindsey Hawkins
Sigma Omicron Chapter President

News from Sharon Boison, Alumnae Specialist

I know it’s been a while since I’ve communicated to you via a newsletter. Post-convention, there is so much news to share! I know you are all working on your calendar for next year. I’ve already seen some great events and look forward to sharing with you what your sister chapters are doing. We’ll be setting up a conference call soon so that we can talk about changes to reporting and the new Standards of Excellence (SOE).
I’ve included some pictures from convention and also the list of awards winners. It was so exciting to hear your names called! Congratulations to everyone on your hard work and most of all, the sisterhood that you value that keeps you striving to bring AOIIs together!
** You will receive your new roster from HQ soon, so watch for an email from Chapter Services!

Fraternally,
Sharon Janeway Boison, KK ‘76

News from Convention: There is so much to share!
The Board - The much debated governance board concept was passed. This means that, rather than a Vice President holding specific duties, such as administrative, alumnae or collegiate oversight, the board will now concentrate on the vision of the fraternity and long range planning. The paid HQ staff now takes on the responsibility of the day to day operations of the various departments, under the direction of the Board. Only the Vice President of Finance remains with specific duties in overseeing the financial well-being of the fraternity. One additional change to the Board structure is that, for continuity, the past IP will remain on in an advisory capacity for one year.
Our new Executive Board members are – International President Barb Zipperian, VP Finance Krista Whipple, and six Vice Presidents- VP Finance, Krista Whipple, VPs Kathy Jensen, Gail Fitzpatrick, Karen Galehan, Rebecca Herman, Linda Grandolfo, and Allison Allgier and new PIP Susan Danko.
Beta Status – Council voted to amend the by-laws to allow the beta districts to do business. This does not mean that the new structure has passed, only that we can continue with the pilot. The vote on whether or not to the change to districts will not take place until convention in 2011. In the mean time, we will continue with our pilot, of which you are all a crucial part. Be prepared for more surveys and questions on how you think we are doing and what you think is good or needs improvement.
AOII Executive Director –The new AOII Executive Director was introduced at convention. She is Troy LaForge, an Indiana University (Beta Phi) initiate with a beta 1 connection! Troy leaves the position of Assistant Director of
Student Activities and Coordinator for Greek Affairs at Transylvania University to move to Nashville and AOII Headquarters. Melanie Lampertz’s retirement as Executive Director was celebrated at convention.

Awards – The best part!
Central Kentucky Bluegrass Alumnae Chapter received a Gold award under the SOE. They also received a Membership Recruitment award for increasing their membership this past year. Congrats to Chris and her chapter!
Kentucky Lakes chapter received the Pearl award, and also received a Membership Recruitment award. Congrats to Catherine and her chapter!
Jonesboro chapter also received a Pearl award. Congrats to past president Shannon, new president Lindsay, and the chapter!
Evansville Tri-State, Lexington, Little Rock, and Memphis chapters all earned Ruby awards. Congrats to Jan, Melissa, Resa and Trish! This is quite an accomplishment and you should all be very proud of your accomplishments this past year! Lexington chapter also received the Membership Retention award.
And congratulations to Memphis Alumnae Chapter for winning the Membership Recruitment and Retention Award! Trish and her officers worked endlessly last year to recruit sisters to their chapter and to plan sisterhood activities that kept them coming back. Definitely a beta success story!
There were also lots of awards earned by the collegiate chapters that you support. The dedication of your chapter members servicing on AACs and Corporation Boards is to be commended, as well.

Collegiate and alumnae members of Beta 1 gathered after the Rose Banquet for a group photo. Sigma Omicron's Megan Haines Morris
(Chapter Advisor), Lindsey Hawkins (Chapter President), Mackenzie Sims (New Member Educator) are pictured on the right of the photo.

AOII's help community organization

Story from KAIT8

Getting a job in this economy is tough, but even if you get an interview, many women are left thinking, "I have nothing to wear".
Not everyone has the proper clothing to wear to an interview and look professional. But Elena Brown with Staffmark says that's the first thing the employer looks at.
Faye Cox, the Executive Director of the Center, has worked diligently to bring in donations.
"It's slightly used or new clothing that women would wear to their job. So we have everything from casual tops and slacks to business pants and skirt suits. These aren't close that a woman would put in a yard sale for $2 or $5, but they are more than willing to donate them to a woman that needs them."

The Professional Clothes Closet is open to women with a referral from employment services, community agencies, employers, churches, or by presenting a resume.

Saturday, May 16 from 10-3 pm at the First Christian Church on Union St., The Closet will have an open shopping event.
"This will allow women to come in with their referral or resume, but they don't have to make an appointment. They will still get their own personal shopper, and they won't leave with just one outfit."

Ashlyn Kohler, an ASU student and Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority Member, says even college kids can find the items they are looking for.
"My sisters and I looked through our closets and found what we could to give. It's stuff we would wear to an interview. We just know it's hard out there for kids graduating college with no money and no professional looking clothes. We want them to look their best and we hope to spread the word about The Closet."

Congratulations Dr. Charlotte Duniphan Beck

Charlotte Beck (pledge class 1958) received her Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters during the Spring 2009 Commencement. She is only the 2nd woman in ASU's history to receive this wonderful honor. There was a reception held for her on May 8, 2009 at the new Arkansas State University Cooper Alumni Center. There was about 90 people that showed up to congratulate Dr. Beck.
